Amazon announced setting up a new region in Beijing, China. "We will start out with a limited preview, which will be made available to a select group of Chinese and multinational companies in early 2014," said AWS evangelist Jeff Barr in a blog post. "Among the thousands of AWS customers in China are Qihu 360, Xiaomi, FunPlus Game, Mobotap, TCL, Hisense, Tiens, Kingsoft, Light in the Box, NQ mobile, Papaya mobile, Madhouse, DerbySoft, Tap4fun, DeNA China, Boyaa interactive, Huan.tv, and Sungy Mobile Limited. With applications ranging from social gaming to mobile, to security and biotech, many of these companies will participate in the limited preview of the AWS China Region."

China Net Center and SINNET are to provide the infrastructure, network services, and CDN services that are required to support the launch and operation of AWS technology services in China. The similar initiatives are already taken by Microsoft and IBM (read about it in the following paragraph) and thus, as said in GigaOM, China seems to be the new wild west of the cloud computing, while only Google is moving in other direction, probably because of internet censorship clashes with China in the past.

IBM announced last week the joining of forces with China's largest carrier-neutral Internet Data Center service provider, 21Vianet Group, to introduce IBM's premier cloud infrastructure service and accelerate cloud adoption in China. "This partnership brings the most powerful, secure, and scalable cloud built on open standards, known as IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+, to China due to the rising demand for managing more complex, mission critical workloads and applications in the cloud by large enterprises," it is said in the official press release. "Our clients, the pillars of China’s economy, will see IBM further accelerating its efforts around driving innovation in China with enhanced IBM cloud offerings as a platform. We are setting a new benchmark for cloud computing performance in China,” said Laurie Tropiano (IBM). While AWS is relatively new to China, IBM has a long experience of working with customers in the country, which makes them a credible players, but not without competitors.

This year, they explore the idea that everything will learn – driven by a new era of cognitive systems where machines will learn, reason and engage with us in a more natural and personalized way.
