How to Step Gently Into a $125 billion Cloud Computing Market

"In 2013, the addressable market of cloud computing will be about $125 billion," predicts GigaOm Research. "The growth of cloud computing is clear. GigaOM Research estimates that the addressable market of cloud computing will reach almost $160 billion by 2014."

No single path, but including good emerging patterns for cloud computing, will help organizations move more easily to the cloud. "Organizations moving to the cloud should understand where they are, where they need to go, and the best technological path to get there. They must also be willing to understand the existing state of enterprise IT at the most primitive levels. With that understanding, they must break apart the problem domains into component parts that they can understand, evaluate, and perhaps move to cloud-based platforms — if that proves the best path for the business," says David Linthicum, one of the cloud computing leading experts. Find the full paper here and elaboration of the matching requirements of the path which include:

  • Direct peering implementations
  • One-stop shops that offer most cloud-based services
  • Cloud services brokerages that offer migration to specific cloud applications
  • Co-location and hosting providers that create cloud exchanges or marketplaces

Mobile Computing and the Cloud: Google vs. Apple

"The new battlefront is the cloud: Google Maps vs. Apple Maps, Siri vs. Google voice search, iCloud vs. Dropbox et al, and Google Now vs…well, nothing at all, yet. This is a big deal," Jon Evans describes new smartphone warfront developments, at TechCrunch. "Your phone becomes less a device in and of itself and more a gateway to its cloud services," Evans continues and claims that "Google's cloud is eating Apple's lunch."

Both Google and Apple are trying to dominate the iPhone app space. Siri's voice search seems to be only one feature of what Google is making possible with its multilayered applications for a smartphone. "Can Apple match that?," Evans wonders, and "by the time they do, will Google have outstripped them again?"
