Rackspace to Contribute to CERN Openlab

CERN openly decided on creating a hybrid cloud solution with Rackspace's public and private cloud in order to continue their experiments and research on the origins of Universe. Rackspace has entered into a contributor agreement with CERN.

CERN openlab provides a framework to test and validate cutting-edge information technologies and services in partnership with industry at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. Rackspace is to contribute with a reference architecture and operational model between Rackspace Private Cloud, Rackspace Public Cloud and CERN's OpenStack powered clouds.

Jim Curry, SVP and general manager of Rackspace Private Cloud, said: "Through ongoing collaboration with CERN openlab, we will broaden the global reach of our hybrid cloud solutions, while simultaneously helping to set the pace of innovation within the field of particle physics." Tim Bell, infrastructure manager in the IT department at CERN, commented: "Rackspace fosters continuous technological improvements through community contributions, while also giving us the ability to quickly address challenges, such as massive scaling, by leveraging the work of others."

Tata Communications Broadcast Quality Video Transcoding and Delivery Service

Indian Tata Communications global network has connectivity to more than 200 countries and territories across 400 PoPs, as well as nearly 1 million square feet of data centre and collocation space worldwide. On July 2nd, they have announced that it had launched the world’s first cloud-based broadcast quality video transcoding and delivery service, in partnership with Harmonic.

They claim that the service offers content creators, service providers and media professionals an integrated end-to-end workflow for moving content files to the cloud and transcoding them into broadcast quality formats ready for immediate delivery and transmission globally. "This drastically reduces the delivery time compared with traditional solutions that rely on the physical transport of media," they say in a press release.

Sameer Kanse, Business Head of Tata Communications' Media Services also commented: "Content creators, service providers and media professionals are under tremendous pressure to maximise the return on their investments, as pirated content can be so easily accessed on illegal websites. By speeding up monetisation of creative content through more efficient production and distribution of digital content globally, we are helping the industry to bridge the gap between broadcast and the Internet, and to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving digital media economy."

Gartner: IT Spend to Reach $3.7 Trillion in 2013

IT spend globally, according to Gartner analysis, is to reach $3.7 Trillion in 2013, which is only a 2% growth on 2012. Projects spend for 2014 are expected to rise to $3.9 trillion, up 4.1%.

"One of the bigger categories contributing to the lower forecasts comes from declines in IT devices, which Gartner has revised down to growing only 2.8% this year, or $695 billion, compared to a previous projection of 7.9%," reports TechCrunch.

That is to say, bigger and more expensive PCs are pushed out by smaller, less expensive tablets and smartphones, that people are more likely to buy.

Telecoms services remains the biggest, while enterprise software remains one of the smaller categories. IT services and data centre systems are both expected to grow.

Security Week: Businesses Happier With Cloud Than They Thought They Would Be

In a survey featured in Security Week, the results proved that companies improved their security once they have moved their data and applications to the cloud. It turns out that:

  • 94% of firms realized the benefits of the cloud and were able to be on top of security patches, antivirus protection, and were able to improve anti-spam filters
  • 60% of companies that held themselves back from cloud investments did so out of security concerns
  • over 40% were unsure about the cloud’s reliability

David Linthicum further comments on the survey: "We’re getting many data points like this back from the field as well. This is largely due to the fact that most businesses who implement cloud computing pay special attention to security. Moreover, the security technology that they leverage is typically more state-of-the-art. Thus, these businesses are much happier with cloud computing than they thought they would be."

Building a New Data-Based Product: Explained With Food

"Anyone who has ever had to cook a meal from scratch or build a big, usable database probably has a better appreciation of the work that goes into creating those finished products. Consumers might take them for granted, but chefs and database architects don’t," writes Derrick Harris for GigaOM.

In a playful article he continues to describe building a business around data as taking a recipe from idea through a menu item. He offers a step-by-step guide to building a data-based product from scratch, informed with insights from Food Genius Co-founder and CEO Justin Massa.
